The mind behind Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid is opening about their health challenges and how they have changed their creative goals.

In a new interview with GQ, Kojima talked about undergoing eye surgery, a COVID-related illness, and feel that it is now “racing against time”. The fear of this health has focused more on creating new projects before the 60 year old developer is too late.

“Time is limited. I don’t know how long I’ll live. So I want to keep making things as long as I’m breathing,” Kojima said.

Death Stranding 2 Launches in 2025 with Big Changes

At Summer Game Fest 2025, Kojima Productions confirmed the release date for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5.

When adding new faces like Lucy (Elle Fanning) and Neil (Luca Marinelli), the game will bring back popular characters like Fragile, Sam Porter Bridge and Cliff. The new trailer showed better combat, cooperative features and real time day night changes.

Kojima called it “a story about trust, survival, and the future of human connection.”

His growing ambition includes making a movie with A24, the studio behind hits like Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Passing His Legacy, But Not His Style

Kojima has shared that she is guiding her Kojima Productions team to continue her inheritance. But he made it clear that he did not want to copy his unique style.

“If they imitate me, they won’t find their own voice. I want them to create something new,” he said in a GamesRadar interview.

Why It Matters

  • Kojima is pushing creative limits in games and film.
  • Death Stranding 2 could shape the future of narrative gaming.
